WA Government's Seven Cities Vision Signals Major Regional Procurement Pipeline

-

The Western Australian Government has unveiled a long-term regional development plan targeting seven cities as the centrepiece of the state's economic future, signalling a significant pipeline of government procurement and infrastructure spending across regional WA for years to come.

Announced on 28 April 2026 by Premier Roger Cook, the Seven Cities vision identifies Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland, Karratha, Broome, Geraldton, and Albany as critical to the government's economic ambitions, with the 2026–27 State Budget and future budgets to support delivery.

What the plan involves

While traditional industries like mining, agriculture, and tourism will continue to be central, the seven cities have been earmarked to drive WA's transition to becoming a renewable energy powerhouse and to support expanded local manufacturing.

Investment will focus on economic infrastructure including industrial land, energy, water, transport, and environmental works, as well as housing, health, and public services to support the skilled workforces these cities will need.

Immediate spending announced in the 2026–27 Budget

A range of projects have already been confirmed as part of the upcoming State Budget, including:

  • $89.1 million for upgrades at Bunbury's Casuarina Boat Harbour
  • $60 million for a new 32-bed modular ward at Albany Health Campus
  • $45 million to support increased services between Perth and Bunbury when the Australind train service reopens
  • $40.7 million for up to 111 new lots in the Broome North residential estate
  • $38.4 million for land assembly and water supply works at the Kemerton Strategic Industrial Area near Bunbury and Boodarie Strategic Industrial Area near Port Hedland
  • $3.8 million to support the Inter-Regional Flight Network connecting Geraldton, Karratha, Port Hedland, and Broome

Housing flagged as priority

Housing availability has been identified as the next area for priority investment, with more than 500 homes to be delivered for regional frontline workers in partnership with WA's resources industry. It will be the largest ever Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH) build, designed to meet projected demand through to 2030.

What this means for Suppliers

For businesses supplying to government, the Seven Cities announcement represents a sustained forward pipeline of work across construction, infrastructure, health, transport, and services concentrated in regional WA. Suppliers already active in these regions, or looking to enter them, should monitor both the WA Government's State Tenders portal and AusTender for upcoming opportunities tied to this agenda.

The government has indicated that additional priority areas will be identified in future budgets as part of the ongoing Seven Cities delivery program.
